Arizona
Fire & Medical Authority

The Arizona Fire & Medical Authority (AFMA), formed in 2017, is a result of a merger of five (5)  fire districts in Maricopa County, AZ,  and serves  Sun City West, Sun Lakes, Buckeye Valley, Wittmann,Tonopah and select other unincorporated areas of Maricopa County.  full list

In total, AFMA serves a population of approximately 90,000 residents with a complement of full time and part-time fire and EMS personnel and associated administrative and support staff. AFMA also has over 50 active citizen volunteers who support the  community support

AFMA provides all hazard emergency services, from twelve (12) fire stations, strategically located throughout the geographical territories served.

AFMA Funding

Operating costs for the  Arizona Fire & Medical Authority (AFMA) are funded almost exclusively from  property taxes of the residents and businesses. Reasons that AFMA is budget-strapped:

  • Since the areas covered are all unincorporated Maricopa County, no sales tax dollars are available to AFMA.

  • Because Arizona legislature caps the property tax increases at 5%, very little extra is available to AFMA each year.

  • A ballot attempt in 2022 to add a minimal sales tax to help Arizona fire districts (which included AFMA) was defeated by voters

  • Increased operating costs due to salary and inflation increases have added to the challenge of AFMA's commitment to saving lives and protecting our families and communities
